National Grid can’t connect the site in time to open, so Nscale is now hunting for its own electricity. The project is funded, consented, and stuck, and it is not the exception. Nscale has the cash, the site, and the customer. What it does not have is a plug. The London-based AI hyperscaler, backed by Nvidia and founded by Josh Payne, spent months lining up a £2bn data center at Loughton in Essex, with Microsoft as anchor tenant and a 90MW grid connection agreed. Then it learned the electricity would not arrive in time to switch the building on.
So the company is doing what more developers now do when the grid says no: shopping for its own power, reportedly in talks with a California fuel-cell maker rather than waiting on National Grid. This is not a firm running out of road. Nscale grew headcount 121% in the first half of 2026 and raised a $900m credit facility weeks before the delay went public. The block is physical, not financial.
That distinction matters, because Nscale’s problem is really Britain’s. The government made data centers a growth priority and named them critical national infrastructure, and planning reform was meant to clear the path. It cleared the wrong queue. The one that decides whether a permitted project gets built is the wait for a live connection, measured in years.

The Loughton facility is designed to run up to 50MW of compute, scaling to 90MW, and to house tens of thousands of Nvidia GB200 GPUs on a former scaffolding yard. On paper it is exactly what the UK says it wants: private capital, a marquee tenant, and sovereign compute built at home. Every box that used to signal a green light is ticked.
Except the last one. A grid connection used to be a formality. Now it is the most expensive question on the schedule, and Nscale found that out after the money was committed. In June 2026, National Grid appointed Balfour Beatty, M Group, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Murphy, and OTW to a £1.2bn program covering 1,000km of overhead line reconductoring across England and Wales.
