£102bn Failure, AI Bills, and the Construction Robots Shipping Now

This week in construction: the official verdict on HS2 landed, revealing a cost to complete between £87.7bn and £102.7bn, with first services delayed to 2036. Britain is paying 15 to 20 times the European rate per kilometre for high-speed rail. Yet more compelling stories emerged beneath the surface.

After six decades as the last major unautomated sector, construction robotics are finally shipping. Bedrock secured $270 million in funding early this year, while Crewline raised $7 million with a $26 million order book. Robots for rebar tying operate at four to six times human speed. Additional technologies in solar piling, reality capture, and self-verifying installation robots are generating real revenue. A new perspective on humanoid robots offers corrections many executives have yet to hear.

The pressing question for industry leaders is whether their businesses are structured like HS2 or if they align with more adaptable alternatives. This reflection is essential for navigating the next twelve months in construction.
