Bedrock Robotics Says Its Excavators Are Now Digging With Nobody in the Cab
Bedrock Robotics says its excavators have completed productive work on live commercial construction sites with nobody in the cab, which the company describes as a first for the industry. The machines are running on a water treatment project in Nevada and major earthworks in Texas. The system retrofits excavators contractors already own in a single day, a site manager sets the job plan, and the machine handles perception, planning and digging on its own. Excavators are the starting point. Dump trucks, dozers and loaders are next.
There is one line in autonomy that counts more than any other, and it has nothing to do with sensors or funding rounds. It is whether the seat is empty.
Every autonomous system spends a long stretch with a person sitting there, watching, ready to take over. Removing that person is the moment the technology stops being a very sophisticated assistant and starts being something else. Bedrock Robotics says its excavators have now crossed it, performing productive work on live commercial jobsites with no operator in the cab.
That work is happening on real projects. A water treatment facility in Nevada. Major earthworks in Texas. Not a test pad, not a fenced-off corner of a site, but scopes with owners, schedules and money attached.
Bedrock is claiming the first fully autonomous excavator work on live commercial construction sites with an empty cab. It runs on retrofitted machines contractors already own, installed in a day, with automatic stopping if anyone gets too close.
Why The Empty Cab Is The Whole Story
Supervised autonomy and operator-out autonomy are different products
Until now, autonomous earthmoving has meant supervised autonomy. The machine does the work, a person sits in the seat, and the hours accumulate. Bedrock’s own $270 million Series B in February 2026 described first fully operator-less deployments as a target for the year ahead, which tells you how the company itself weighted the milestone.
The difference matters commercially, not just technically. A supervised machine still consumes an operator. An operator-out machine returns one to the labor pool, and it can keep working through the hours a crew cannot cover. That is the point at which the math on a bulk earthworks program genuinely changes.
How The System Works
A day to install, then a job plan and a machine that figures out the rest
Bedrock does not build excavators. It retrofits the ones contractors already have, fitting cameras, sensors, computing hardware and AI to existing machines in a single day. Nothing gets replaced, and the fleet keeps its resale value.
From there the workflow is refreshingly ordinary. A site manager sets the job plan. The excavator perceives what is around it, plans its own movements and digs. The system has been fitted across excavators from 20 to 80 tons, so it covers most of what sits in a heavy civil yard.
- Retrofit in one day. Cameras, sensors, onboard compute and AI onto machines already in the fleet.
- Job plan set by a person. The site manager defines the work, the same way they would brief a crew.
- Perception, planning and digging on board. The excavator reads its surroundings and works out how to execute.
- Automatic stop on intrusion. If a person or unauthorized object gets too close, the machine halts.
Safety Is The Reason This Took Time
An empty cab raises the bar rather than lowering it
Taking the operator out removes a person from a machine that swings several tons through a blind arc, which is a safety gain in itself. It also removes the last human check on the ground around it, so the automatic stop behavior carries real weight. Bedrock’s machines halt when a person or unauthorized object comes too close.
Contractors will judge this on incident data over months, not on an announcement. What the announcement does establish is that at least one general contractor has been comfortable enough to let it run productively on a water treatment project, and public water infrastructure is not where firms go to take casual risks.
The Problem It Is Aimed At
Operator shortage, cost pressure, schedule risk
US construction needs close to 800,000 additional workers over the next two years, and retirements keep widening the gap. The ambition is a coordinated fleet, not a clever digger
Bedrock wants autonomous dump trucks, dozers and loaders working alongside the excavators, with the whole group coordinating a job between them. Chief executive Boris Sofman framed the Series B as a step toward fleets operating as connected systems that change how contractors plan, staff and execute work.
That ambition is worth taking seriously given the team. The company was founded in 2024 by former Waymo engineers, including Sofman, who led Waymo’s self-driving truck program, and has raised $350 million to date. Its partner network spans Sundt, Zachry Construction, Champion Site Prep, Capitol Aggregates, Austin Bridge and Road, Maverick Constructors and Haydon Companies.
